Insulin resistance plays a role in many medical conditions, such as type 2 diabetes, obesity, PCOS, high blood pressure, and cardiovascular disease. Overcoming insulin resistance is an important part of achieving hormonal balance.

When we eat food, our body releases glucose and we use it for energy. Pancreas Insulin, produced by the pancreas, is the hormone that helps with this conversion. Glucose gets stored in the muscles, fat cells and liver. This enables your body to use the energy in the future as well.

Insulin resistance occurs when your cells do not respond well to this hormone. Your body is unable to efficiently convert glucose from the blood into energy.

The level of insulin resistance is determined by many factors. It depends on your genes and your overall body weight. If the person has excess weight, then there is a high chance of insulin resistance in your body.

CAUSES OF INSULIN RESISTANCE

This problem have some reasons behind it which you should know about.

1) Excess weight

Excess weight, especially in the belly
This is the one of the main reason of insulin resistance. If the person is continuously gaining weight and have excess weight than his expected body composition and most importantly have excessive fat near his abdominal area, then there are great chances that the person have an insulin resistance issue.

2) Genetics

This also depends on our genes. It means that if any of your family members have suffered from Insulin Resistance. They are more chances that you will be genetically affected by it. You may be suffering from being suffering issue.

3) Physical Inactivity

Research has proved that if your body is at total rest and there is nobody movement during the whole day and you are sitting in the same place for long hours, your body will develop insulin resistance problem.

4) Stress

Stress is the main reason for most health issues. Because when a person takes stress, two hormones are secreted, cortisol and epinephrine which promote insulin resistance. Just always keep in mind, taking stress is not a solution to any problem but is a reason for most of your health problems.

5) Infection or Illness

If a person has any sort of infection or illness, it increases Insulin Resistance. Illness can cause increased levels of substances known as inflammatory cytokines which makes such tissues in body which are more resistant to the actions of Insulin.

6) Aging

It is a quiet controversial topic that aging really cause the problem of Insulin Resistance. But according to some experts it’s not aging which make people more insulin resistant. But in reality, there is decrease in physical activity of person and some people gain weight too and problem like Insulin Resistance occurs.

SYMPTOMS OF INSULIN RESISTANCE

When a person have a problem like Insulin Resistance, body will start showing following symptoms.

1) Fatigue Is a Sign of Insulin Resistance

According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, you feel tired due to normal metabolic activity. If your metabolism isn’t working efficiently, it will take time for you to gain energy. Due to which you will feel tired even after eating well.

2) Insulin Resistance Increases Hunger and Thirst

Yes, you want to drink or drink excessive amounts of water because of insulin resistance. Apart from this, you also start thinking that eating will give you more energy, due to which you become a victim of overeating.

3) Increased urination

If you are drinking a lot of water, you will also go to the washroom many times. Frequent urge to urinate is the most common sign of insulin resistance.

4) Darkening of the skin

Have you noticed a dark patch around your neck, underarms and waist? This is due to insulin resistance in your body. This is known as acanthosis nigricans. Dark skin patches are high in melanin, they form a band-like structure, especially around your neck.

5) Weakness in hands and feet

“It is a sensory symptom, when the sugar level rises due to insulin resistance, it affects the blood circulation. This breaks the signal. In high levels, the patient would lose this signal completely and they would not be able to feel anything.”

6) Hair fall and acne

Hormone changes are one of the main reasons behind hair loss and acne. Also another reason is that you crave carbs when insulin is going bonkers from your body. This leads to overproduction of sebum which is not good for your hair or your skin.
